ADAS disease trials highlight value of broad-spectrum fungicides

Crops can come under attack from more than one disease at the same time, so having a fungicide with broad-spectrum activity is often the logical choice.

In ADAS trials, Iblon®, the Bayer brand name for the SDHI active substance isoflucypram, has demonstrated good activity against the tripartite disease complex of Septoria, yellow rust and brown rust.

“Isoflucypram has much to offer at either the T1 or T2 timing,” Chloe Francis, ADAS plant pathologist, says.

“It offers very good broad-spectrum activity against the main foliar threats of Septoria, yellow rust and brown rust and could fit well at either the T1 or T2 timing depending on the disease risk and location,” she adds.

ADAS has had isoflucypram in trials since 2018, investigating the straight in the form of Vimoy® that is applied in a mixture with Proline® (prothioconazole) and as Plaxium®, a co-formulation containing fluopyram + isoflucypram + prothioconazole.

“Isoflucypram has performed impressively with both Vimoy® + prothioconazole or Plaxium® outperforming Ascra® Xpro® (bixafen + fluopyram + prothioconazole). As with Ascra® Xpro® compared with Aviator® Xpro® (bixafen + prothioconazole), the inclusion of fluopyram in Plaxium® may add Septoria activity over Vimoy® + prothioconazole,” Mrs Francis says.

The initial focus of ADAS’ work with isoflucypram sought to assess its performance against Septoria. Satisfied that it demonstrated useful activity against the biggest disease threat, the trials were extended to include yellow and brown rust to consider its broad-spectrum activity.

“Isoflucypram is particularly active on brown rust, hence its potential role as a T2, while the inclusion of prothioconazole ensures it does well against yellow rust which is useful at both T1 and T2. Some fungicides are good on one disease and not others which can lead to complicated tank-mixes,” she says.
