Establishment is recognised as the biggest challenge when it comes to growing OSR. Regardless of when or how you sow, Bayer commercial technical manager, James Howat identifies 10 top tips to minimise your OSR establishment risk.

1. Thoroughly chop and spread any cereal straw behind the combine to reduce slug shelter and any interference with sowing

2.Loosen soil at depth ahead of or at sowing wherever necessary to avoid any restriction to root development

3. Choose a fast developing as well as strong all-round DEKALB variety better able to grow away from challenges

4. Join the enhanced DEKALB Establishment Scheme to share the financial risk of crop failure from insurmountable pressures

5. Drill only once there is sufficient moisture in the ground to support the most rapid robust early growth

6. Sow into a reasonable tilth at a consistent depth of 2-3 cm for the most even germination and emergence

7. Drill by seed number at rates of no more than 30-50 plants/m2 to target spring populations

8. Apply available phosphate and nitrogen to the seedbed for the best early uptake and crop development of 25-40 plants/m2

9. Consolidate thoroughly and evenly within 24-48 hours of sowing to preserve moisture and ensure the best seed-to-soil contact

10. Maintain the most effective early control of key pests, diseases and weeds to minimise extra establishment challenges
