Bayer Pollen Beetle Predictor is now showing that by the end of this weekend migration will have started across the whole of England.
Last Friday (bulletin 1) almost half the met stations on the southern half of the ‘migration start’ map were red. Today the other half are yellow indicating migration expected to start from today to Sunday. Only in Scotland are there met stations still coloured green showing migration has not yet begun.
It’s important to note that ‘migration start’ does not mean that beetles are entering crops. It is telling you that beetles have started to emerge from hibernation so the ‘new migration’ map should be consulted regularly, to see when conditions suit migration and crops should be monitored.
Across England the ‘new migration’ map is showing moderate migration conditions (dark green) reflecting the weekend weather forecast of temperatures in the low to mid teens centigrade. This is likely to encourage beetles to migrate to crops in low numbers. At least a day of good migration conditions – sunny and 15oC or more – is needed to turn met stations yellow.
Spring has sprung and so have pollen beetle; keep an eye on your nearest met station for new migration.
