Chingford chooses Bayer CropScience

Helping fruit growers achieve the sustainable future they desire will be one of the stories being told by Bayer CropScience at Fruit Logistica in Berlin in February, as the company announces a partnership with a major multiple supplier.

“Chingford Fruit Ltd, a leading fresh fruit importer and supplier in the UK, is choosing Bayer CropScience as the preferred global partner for innovative agro-chemicals and technical support in implementing plant protection solutions,” announces Sabine Stolz, food chain manager, Bayer CropScience.

The work with Chingford is being conducted under the Food Chain Partnership programme, a diverse portfolio of global projects in which Bayer CropScience is using its knowledge of good agricultural practice, food safety legislation and communications working across the entire food chain from seed to shelf.

Both organisations recognise the importance of growers as the foundation of any sustainable food chain. “Alongside Chingford’s horticulture experts we are helping growers overcome obstacles to more sustainable methods of production,” she explains.

“Key to the success of the partnership is identifying the limitations of sustainability strategies; often they are too theoretical, prescriptive and holistic,” says Willie Wood, senior sustainable horticulture manager at Chingford. “Local conditions, for example, are often the underlying cause of many challenges faced by producers. Failing to account for local conditions can therefore explain why growers have difficulty in adopting and meeting sustainability objectives.

“Our research, and that of others, shows consumers seek and value sustainably produced fruit and veg. It’s becoming increasingly important to retailers and as suppliers it is more and more important to us too.”
