Field horsetail

Equisetum arvense


Commonly found in gardens, wasteland, permanent grass leys and arable land. Particular problem in perennial fruit crops. The plant is toxic to livestock and flourishes in damp conditions.

Field horsetail - young1. Infertile shoots appear after the spore bearing shoots with lateral shoots in whorls becoming shorter towards the tips.
Field horsetail - mature2. Tall (up to 80 cm) perennial spore bearing plant with extensive underground rhizomes.
