Inspiring the next generation in agriculture at the Border Union Agricultural Society Countryside day

Cambridge, 31st May 2018

For the third year running, a team from Bayer has participated in the Schools Countryside Day hosted at the Border Union Agricultural Society showground in Kelso, Scottish Borders.

The annual event invites 1,200 ten year old pupils and 100 teachers from 64 schools located across the Scottish Borders. The day offers a unique opportunity for pupils in P5 to gain a greater understanding of where their food comes from. Showcasing all aspects of the food supply chain, representatives of the agri-food sector ranging from sheep farming through to potato producers and R&D companies like Bayer dedicate a day to sharing their passion for food and farming with the next generation.

Bayer has been sponsoring BUAS for three years now, and is delighted to be back again this year. ‘’Getting involved in the schools education day and directly engaging with the next generation is one of the highlights of our year’’ said Grant Reid, Commercial Technical Manager for Scotland.

‘’There is nothing better than seeing children become enthused for the first time by science, insects, and arable farming. The stories of children announcing to their teachers that they want to become farmers one days after attending the countryside day only continue to increase and is a powerful message to the industry that when engagement works, it can turn that myth of farming being a career of last resort to a career of first choice in the long-run’’

BUAS have been coordinating and hosting the schools day for pupils in P5 now for six years, welcoming up to 1,500 school children to their famous showground each year.

The Countryside Day is one of a growing number of initiatives that have been supporting agricultural education, reaching out to the general public and inspiring the next generation, across Scotland.
