Field horsetail

Equisetum arvense

Importance

Commonly found in gardens, wasteland, permanent grass leys and arable land. Particular problem in perennial fruit crops. The plant is toxic to livestock and flourishes in damp conditions.

1. Infertile shoots appear after the spore bearing shoots with lateral shoots in whorls becoming shorter towards the tips.

2. Tall (up to 80 cm) perennial spore bearing plant with extensive underground rhizomes.
